Planning a kitchen remodel in Largo: what to expect

What a kitchen remodel in Largo really costs and how long it takes, from the first walkthrough to the final inspection, with 2025 cost data and local permit tips.

Planning a kitchen remodel in Largo: what to expect

A kitchen remodel is one of the best upgrades you can make, and also one of the most involved. Knowing how the process works, what it costs and where the delays come from makes it a lot less stressful. Here's how a typical project goes, with real numbers and a few Largo-specific things to know before you start.

What a kitchen remodel costs

Kitchens vary a lot, but local and national data give a useful starting point:

Project Typical cost Source
Typical Tampa Bay kitchen remodel $13,000 to $36,000 (about $23,000 on average) Angi data via Axios Tampa Bay, 2024
Most homeowners' kitchen projects, nationally $14,591 to $41,617 (about $27,000 on average) HomeAdvisor, 2025 data
Minor remodel (new cabinet fronts, counters, sink, appliances, flooring) About $28,500 Cost vs. Value, 2025, national
Major remodel (all-new cabinets, counters, island and appliances) About $82,800 Cost vs. Value, 2025, national
Median spend reported by renovating homeowners $60,000 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, 2025, national

The Tampa Bay figure is based on remodels from 2012 to 2022, so expect today's prices to run higher. The smaller project also pays back better if you sell. In the 2025 Cost vs. Value report, a minor midrange kitchen remodel recovered about 113% of its cost at resale, while a major midrange remodel recovered about 51%. If you're planning to sell in the next few years, a smart refresh usually beats a gut job.

What moves the price most: moving plumbing or walls, cabinet quality (stock, semi-custom or custom), countertop material, and how much of the old kitchen has to come out.

How long it takes

Plan on two phases: planning and building. Planning and ordering often take several weeks. Construction, according to U.S. News, runs about 1 to 2 weeks for cosmetic updates, 4 to 8 weeks for a typical renovation, and 8 to 12 weeks or more for a full overhaul.

Most delays come from materials, not labor. Cabinet retailers quote lead times of 1 to 2 weeks for stock cabinets, 4 to 6 weeks for semi-custom and 6 to 12 weeks for custom, often longer in spring and around the holidays. Stone countertops can't be measured until the cabinets are installed, and fabrication usually takes another 7 to 14 days after templating.

How a project goes with us

1. The walkthrough

We start at your house. We look at the space, measure, check what's behind the walls where we can, and talk about how you use your kitchen: who cooks, what drives you crazy about it now, and what you've been saving pictures of.

2. A detailed estimate

You get a written estimate that spells out the scope: what's being removed, what's going in, and who's supplying what. If something isn't included, it should say so. Clear estimates are how you avoid surprises later.

3. Selections

Cabinets, countertops, backsplash, sink and faucet, hardware, lighting and flooring. Quartz has led recent Houzz surveys (42% of renovating homeowners chose engineered quartz in its 2022 study), and white and off-white remain the most popular counter colors. Because of the lead times above, we lock in selections before demolition starts, so nobody is stuck waiting with a torn-out kitchen.

4. Permits

Replacing countertops, refacing cabinets or swapping a sink in the same spot usually doesn't need a permit. Moving plumbing, adding circuits or outlets, running gas, or changing walls usually does.

A few Largo-specific notes:

  • Check who issues your permit. Inside city limits, permits come from the City of Largo's Building Division at 201 Highland Ave. (727-586-7488). Not every address with a Largo mailing address is inside city limits, though. Look up your property on the Pinellas County Property Appraiser's site to see whether the city or Pinellas County handles your permit.
  • Largo is switching permit systems. The city is replacing its old TRAKiT system with a new online portal, the Largo Civic Access Portal (LCAP).
  • A new building code arrives this winter. The 8th Edition (2023) of the Florida Building Code took effect December 31, 2023. The 9th Edition (2026) is scheduled to take effect December 31, 2026. If your permit will be filed around the turn of the year, ask which edition will apply to your project.

As a licensed general contractor, we pull the permits we're licensed for, coordinate licensed electricians and plumbers for their parts of the work, and schedule the inspections.

5. Construction

Demolition, any rough-in work and inspections, then cabinets, countertop templating and installation, backsplash, fixtures and trim. We keep the work area as contained as we can and clean up every day, so the rest of your home stays livable.

6. The final walkthrough

When we're done, we walk the kitchen with you, test everything, and make sure every door closes and every drawer glides the way it should. Any permits get their final inspections and are closed out.

Tips to keep it on track

  • Set up a temporary kitchen somewhere else in the house. A microwave, coffee maker, mini fridge and folding table go a long way.
  • Decide before demo, not during. Every change after work starts costs time and usually money.
  • Keep a cushion. Older Largo homes can hide surprises behind the walls, like old plumbing or water damage under the sink. Setting aside 10% to 15% for the unexpected keeps a surprise from becoming a crisis.
  • Hire licensed and get it in writing. According to Houzz, 86% of renovating homeowners hired a professional, and half hired a general contractor. Check any contractor's license at myfloridalicense.com.
