Short answer: in Tampa, a typical mold remediation job runs $1,347 to $3,778, with an average of $2,548, or about $10 to $25 per square foot, according to Angi's Tampa cost page (updated October 15, 2025). A mold inspection there runs $300 to $1,075. Small patches under about 10 square feet are usually a do-it-yourself job, according to the EPA.

| 300–1,000 sq ft (large job) | $6,000–$15,000 | HomeGuide (national, Feb 2026) | No |
Other national sources run a bit higher: HomeGuide lists $15 to $30 per square foot, and Fixr $10 to $30 per square foot (national averages, not Florida).
Mold removal cost by location in the house
| Where the mold is | Tampa cost (Angi, Oct 2025) | National (HomeGuide, 2026) | Do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | $525–$1,075 | $500–$2,000 | Some of it, if small and on hard surfaces |
| Crawl space | $525–$2,150 | $1,500–$4,000 | No |
| Attic | $1,075–$4,300 | $1,500–$6,000 on average | No |
| Whole house | $10,750–$32,250 | $15,000–$30,000 | No |
Inside walls or behind fixtures costs more: Angi's national page says bathroom remediation "can reach $8,000 or more" when mold is behind fixtures or inside walls. Fixr's national figures put walls at $1,000 to $12,000 and A/C ducts at $3,000 to $10,000. Duct and A/C work is done by licensed HVAC contractors.
Mold inspection cost in Florida
| Service | Cost | Source | Do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mold inspection | $300–$1,075 | Angi, Tampa (Oct 2025) | No: licensed mold assessor for over 10 sq ft |
| Mold inspection | $303–$1,075, average $689 | Angi (national, Oct 2026) | No |
| Air test | $250–$350 | Angi (national, Oct 2026) | No |
| Swab test | $200–$300 | Angi (national, Oct 2026) | No |
| Mold testing alone | $50–$350 per test | HomeGuide (national) | DIY kits exist, $10–$100 (HomeGuide) |
Is mold testing worth it? The EPA says "In most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary." It adds that "no EPA or other federal limits have been set for mold or mold spores," but that surface sampling "may be useful to determine if an area has been adequately cleaned or remediated."
What drives the price
- How much mold. Per-square-foot pricing means size matters most.
- Where it is. Attics, crawl spaces and wall cavities take containment and access work.
- The water source. The EPA says that if sewage or other contaminated water caused it, "call in a professional who has experience cleaning and fixing buildings damaged by contaminated water."
- What has to be thrown out. The EPA says porous materials "such as ceiling tiles and carpet, may have to be thrown away if they become moldy."
- The rebuild. Drywall replacement runs $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot, labor and materials included (HomeGuide, national). Angi's Tampa page lists drywall damage from mold at $1,075 to $3,125. Fixr puts water damage and mold together at $2,700 to $10,000 on average (national). See our drywall repair cost and water damage repair cost guides.
- Fixing the cause. The EPA: "If you clean up the mold, but don't fix the water problem, then, most likely, the mold problem will come back." Plumbing and roof repairs are done by licensed plumbers and roofers.
Florida's mold law and what it means for your quote
- Over 10 square feet is licensed work, unless an exemption applies. Florida defines mold assessment and mold remediation as work on mold growth "of greater than 10 square feet" (s. 468.8411).
- Homeowners are exempt on their own property, among other exemptions (s. 468.841).
- Separate assessor and remediator. An assessor generally may not remediate a structure it or its company assessed within the last 12 months, and the reverse, with an exception for certain certified contractors (s. 468.8419). The same section bars assessors and remediators from paying each other for referrals.
- Check the license on DBPR's license search. DBPR's mold-related services page lists the Mold Assessor and Mold Remediator licenses.
- Rebuilding is contractor work. The law says a mold remediator "may not perform any work that requires a license under chapter 489 unless the mold remediator is also licensed under that chapter or complies with that chapter" (s. 468.8411(6)).

Pinellas County notes
- Permits for the repairs. The rules vary by city, so ask yours. In Oldsmar, for example, the city's post-storm guide says no permit is needed for "Removing wet or damaged materials to prevent mold," but "Permits are required for any repairs or reconstruction related to flood damage." See our post on mold after water damage in Oldsmar.
- Itemized repair costs. In flood zones, repair costs can count toward a city's substantial-damage limit. Oldsmar, for example, asks for "a detailed cost breakdown of all materials and labor—including drywall, flooring, painting, and other cosmetic repairs."
