Short answer: in Florida, a hurricane-rated garage door runs about $1,200 to $3,500 installed, and a garage door bracing kit about $150 to $400, according to BuildPriced's Florida hurricane prep guide (May 2026). Florida's My Safe Florida Home program lists an average cost of $1,050 to $1,725 for a garage door. National guides run higher for bigger and impact-glass doors: Angi's national average is $6,000, with most homeowners spending $900 to $10,000.
These are typical ranges, not quotes. Door size, material and the wind pressure your house needs move the price most.
How much does a hurricane garage door cost?
| Door | Typical cost | Scope | Do it yourself? |

| Garage door upgrade (program average) | $1,050–$1,725 | Florida (My Safe Florida Home) | No |
| Hurricane garage door, single | $1,200–$6,000 installed | National (HomeGuide, 2025) | No |

For comparison, Angi's Tampa page for ordinary garage door replacement puts most jobs at $715 to $1,554, with an average of $1,106 (August 2026). By size, the same page lists a single-car door at $900 to $2,600 and a double-car door at $1,500 to $3,900.
Hurricane garage door cost by material
Angi's national figures (October 2026), door and installation:
| Material | Typical cost (national) |
|---|---|
| Vinyl | $900–$4,700 |
| Steel | $1,100–$6,700 |
| Aluminum | $1,200–$6,800 |
| Fiberglass | $1,400–$7,000 |
| Wood | $2,400–$10,000 |
Angi adds $300 to $500 for impact-rated windows in the door.
Garage door brace cost
A bracing kit adds vertical posts or struts that help an existing door resist wind.
| Option | Typical cost | Scope | Do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garage door bracing kit | $150–$400 | Florida (BuildPriced, May 2026) | Some of it: only a kit made and approved for your door, following the maker's instructions |
| Professionally installed storm kit (struts and braces) | About $200–$750 | National (FLASH, 2025) | No |
| DIY retrofit kit materials for a hurricane garage door | About $500 | National (Angi) | Some of it, as above |
The Florida Division of Emergency Management's Hurricane Retrofit Guide calls the garage door "usually the single biggest opening on your house," and says a wind-rated door "will have a label on a side edge or the top edge." Check yours before buying a kit.
What drives the price
- Size: a double door costs more than a single in every source that splits by size.
- Material: steel and aluminum cost less than fiberglass and wood in Angi's figures.
- Rating: My Safe Florida Home says "Impact-rated doors can cost more," and Angi adds $300 to $500 for impact windows in the door.
- The opener: HomeGuide lists $150 to $300 for an opener. A new circuit or outlet is electrical work for a licensed electrician.
- Removal and permits: HomeGuide lists removal at $50 to $200 for a single door and permits at $50 to $100; Angi's Tampa page lists permits at $75 to $150.
Help paying for it
My Safe Florida Home, the state's hurricane-retrofit grant program, covers garage doors as opening protection for eligible homes, and its garage door page says "The maximum MSFH grant is $10,000." The program's eligibility rules (homestead, built before 2008, insured value and income limits) are in our Safety Harbor impact windows post. Florida's home-hardening sales tax refund also covers impact-resistant garage doors bought from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029, up to $500 for eligible homestead owners.
Permits and product approval
Rules come from each building department. Treasure Island has a garage door replacement permit checklist that says the door "must be impact resistant." Clearwater's list of work that requires a permit includes "replacement of windows, doors, garage doors or skylights in existing or altered wall openings." Florida requires product approval for exterior doors, and says a product may not be sold or advertised as hurricane or impact protection unless it's approved (s. 553.842, Fla. Stat.). Approvals can be looked up on the Florida Building Commission's product approval search. Check with your city, or Pinellas County for unincorporated areas, before work starts.
