Short answer: fixing a slab leak costs about $630 to $4,400, with an average of $2,280, according to HomeAdvisor's national data (June 2026). Finding the leak first usually costs $150 to $400. We couldn't find a Florida or Tampa Bay price for slab leaks, so the slab figures on this page are national; the repiping, pipe repair and water damage figures are for Tampa.
These are typical ranges, not quotes. The method the plumber uses, and how much flooring has to come up, move the price more than anything else.
How much does it cost to fix a slab leak?
| Job | Typical cost | Scope | Do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slab leak repair (all methods) | $630–$4,400, average $2,280 | National (HomeAdvisor, June 2026) | No: licensed plumber |
| Digging into the slab and replacing the pipe | $700–$5,000 | National (HomeGuide, Oct. 2025) | No: licensed plumber |
| Breaking the slab or trenching to reach the pipe | $500–$3,000 | National (HomeGuide) | No |
| Rerouting the line around the slab | $600–$4,000 | National (HomeAdvisor) | No: licensed plumber and permit |
| Rerouting the line around the slab | $3,900–$7,500 | National (HomeGuide) | No |
| Pipe lining (cured-in-place) | $80–$250 per linear foot | National (HomeAdvisor) | No |
| Patching the slab (foundation patching) | $250–$800 | National (HomeGuide) | No |
The two national sources disagree on rerouting, so both ranges are shown. A reroute replaces a leaking line with a new one run through the walls or attic instead of under the slab; a spot repair opens the floor right over the leak.
Slab leak detection cost
HomeAdvisor says to plan on about $280 to pinpoint a slab leak, with most homeowners paying $150 to $400 (national, June 2026). Before you pay for detection, you can check for a leak yourself with the water meter and a two-hour no-water test: see our guide on how to check for a water leak using your water meter.
Repair or reroute?
- Spot repair through the slab fixes the leak where it is. It means breaking out flooring and concrete, then patching the slab and replacing the floor.
- Reroute abandons the leaking line and runs a new one another way. It avoids breaking the floor but involves opening walls or ceilings.
- Pipe lining coats the inside of the existing pipe, priced per linear foot.
Which one fits depends on where the leak is, the pipe's age and material, and whether more leaks are likely. That's the plumber's call.
Whole-house repipe cost in Tampa
If a home has had more than one leak, a plumber may suggest repiping. Angi's Tampa figures (May 2026):
| Job | Typical cost | Do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|
| Repipe a house | $1,514–$15,135, average $7,568 | No: licensed plumber and permit |
| PEX pipe | $1–$2 per linear foot | No |
| CPVC pipe | $1–$2 per linear foot | No |
| Copper pipe | $2–$8 per linear foot | No |
| Repipe to a water heater | $705–$1,815 | No |
For smaller jobs, Angi puts a typical Tampa pipe replacement at $338 to $2,610, with an average of $1,474 (August 2026), and a pipe leak repair at $252 to $858 (May 2026).
The repairs after the plumber
The plumbing is only part of the bill. The floor over a spot repair has to be replaced, and water from the leak can soak drywall, baseboard and cabinets. Angi's Tampa figures:
| Repair | Typical cost | Scope | Do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water damage restoration | $1,962–$7,250, average $4,606 | Tampa (Angi, Aug. 2026) | Some of it: drying out and removing wet materials |
| Drywall repair | $324–$1,017, average $642 | Tampa (Angi, July 2026) | Some of it: see our drywall cut-out guide |
| Flooring installation | $1,376–$4,819, average $3,050 | Tampa (Angi, Aug. 2026) | Some of it: depends on the flooring |
| Water-damaged cabinets | $150–$500 per affected area | National (Angi, Aug. 2026) | Some of it: emptying and drying |
If the old tile or wood can't be matched after a spot repair, more of the floor may need replacing. Our water damage, flooring and drywall price guides go into more detail.
What drives the price
- Repair method: spot repair, reroute or lining.
- Where the leak is, and how much floor has to come up to reach it.
- The flooring on top: tile and wood cost more to remove and replace than carpet.
- Pipe material and age, and whether more leaks are likely (which can make a reroute or repipe the better value).
- Water damage that spread before anyone found the leak.
Permits in Pinellas County
Plumbing work generally needs a permit. The City of Largo lists "electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or gas work" among projects that generally require one, and says its fees "are based on the value of the job, including labor and materials." Clearwater's fee schedule is also based on job value: $33 plus $7.25 per $1,000 of value for projects of $100,000 or less (updated June 2026). Florida's under-$7,500 permit exemption doesn't apply to plumbing work (s. 553.79(1)(g), Fla. Stat.). Usually the licensed plumber pulls the plumbing permit. In unincorporated Pinellas County, the county's express permit list includes interior-only repipes and emergency water service replacement. Replacing flooring generally doesn't need a permit in Largo.
