Short answer: installed baseboard costs about $5.70 to $9 per linear foot, labor and materials included, and most homeowners pay $800 to $2,250 for a job, about $1,100 on average, according to Angi and HomeAdvisor (national). Removing old baseboard adds about $1.50 per linear foot, and painting adds about $1 to $6 per linear foot.
We couldn't find a published Florida or Tampa Bay baseboard price, so the figures below are national and labeled that way. These are typical ranges, not quotes.
Baseboard installation cost per linear foot
Angi puts installed baseboard at $5.70 to $9 per linear foot for labor and materials, with labor alone about $5 to $7.75 per linear foot (national). HomeAdvisor gives the same $5.70 to $9.00 installed range, and lists new baseboard on a replacement job at about $6 to $9 per linear foot (national, 2026). Angi notes price breaks of around $0.50 per linear foot on larger projects.
How much does it cost to replace baseboards in a house?
Angi's national figures by job size:
| Baseboard length | Typical cost (national) | Do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|
| 100 linear ft | $570–$900 | Yes, with a miter saw, nailer and patience |
| 200 linear ft | $1,140–$1,800 | Yes, if you're comfortable with coped and mitered corners |
| 300 linear ft | $1,710–$2,700 | Some of it: long runs and tight corners take practice |
| 500 linear ft | $2,850–$4,500 | Some of it |
| 1,000 linear ft | $5,700–$9,000 | Some of it: a whole house is a big job |
A rough way to estimate length: measure the perimeter of each room and subtract door openings. If your home was built before 1978 and the old baseboard is painted, see the lead paint note below before you pull it off.
Baseboard material cost by type
Angi's national material prices, per linear foot, before labor:
| Material | Material cost per linear ft (national) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PVC | $0.90–$1.40 | Won't swell when wet |
| MDF | $1–$1.40 | Paint-grade; can swell if it gets wet |
| Polystyrene | $1.15–$1.65 | Lightweight |
| Pine | $1.40–$1.85 | Paint or stain grade |
| Poplar | $1.90–$2.50 | Paint grade |
| Maple or oak | $2.50–$5 | Stain grade |
| Cherry or mahogany | $4.50–$10 | Premium stain grade |
Taller baseboard costs more: Angi lists 3¼-inch profiles at about $1 to $2.50 and 5½-inch at about $3.25 to $7 per linear foot, with each extra quarter inch adding about $0.25 to $0.50 (national). In Florida homes that see leaks, mopping or a flood risk, many owners choose PVC or other moisture-resistant baseboard in bathrooms, laundry rooms and ground floors (our advice, not a source's).
Baseboard removal, painting and other costs
| Item | Typical cost (national) | Source | Do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove old baseboard | About $1.50 per linear ft | HomeAdvisor (2026) | Yes, carefully: test pre-1978 paint for lead first |
| Painting baseboard | $1–$6 per linear ft extra | Angi; HomeAdvisor | Yes |
| Nails, caulk and putty | $25–$100 | Angi | Yes |
| Shoe molding installed | $5.50–$8.50 per linear ft | HomeAdvisor (2026) | Yes |
| Quarter round installed | $5.50–$9 per linear ft | HomeAdvisor (2026) | Yes |
What drives the price
- Length and layout. More corners, stairs and short runs mean more cuts per foot.
- Material and height. Hardwood and tall profiles cost several times as much as MDF or PVC.
- Removal and wall repair. Pulling old baseboard can damage drywall that then needs patching.
- Floors that aren't flat. Slab floors with dips need scribing or shoe molding to close gaps.
- Painting. Pre-primed baseboard still needs caulk and finish paint.
- Water damage. If the old baseboard came off after a leak, the wall behind it may need to dry out and be repaired first; see our water damage repair cost guide.
Lead paint in older homes
In homes built before 1978, painted baseboard may have lead-based paint. The EPA's lead-safe renovation (RRP) rule covers paid renovations that disturb paint in pre-1978 homes, and the EPA requires the firm that contracts that work to be RRP-certified (EPA). If you're doing it yourself, test before you pull or sand old painted trim.
Do you need a permit to install baseboards in Pinellas County?
Generally no. Pinellas County lists "Painting, wallpapering or installing trim" as cosmetic updates that generally don't need a building permit in unincorporated areas (Pinellas County). St. Petersburg's list of exempted permits covers "Cabinetry, counter tops, painting, papering, tiling, carpeting and other similar finish work," with extra conditions in flood zones and historic districts (City of St. Petersburg, PDF). Clearwater's no-permit list doesn't mention trim, so call (727) 562-4567 if you're unsure (City of Clearwater).
